RUFFWEAR is now live

2019 is now upon us - Its going to be an interesting and exciting year for both the business and the dogs of the NZUSAR Search Dog Association.
Our RUFFWEAR enterprise is now up and running i am pleased to say and our first stand is generating lots of interest. The first question most commonly asked ( by those who dont know the connection with USAR K9's), is why is a plant business involved with K9 gear?
This of course, is an excellent lead in for me to extoll the virtues of the Association, the training, the dogs and of the quality of the gear!! So please check out the gear in the 'Products' section of the website or even better, come in and have a look - i'm always happy to talk.
Training starts up again this weekend for the dogs, they are rearing to go so will be very happy to get out and about. Agility work is a crucial part of their training regime so they will be starting out on a good session over the gear. It's a great way for them to build confidence and balance, especially at height and over different surfaces. It is also a brilliant way keep them supple, imperative attributes for a successful search dog to have.
Early February will be crunch time for young Tama, our handsome Vizsla 'noir', as the SDA National trainer will be up from Christchurch assessing a couple of new potential recruits for the Search Dog training programme. Tama and his mate Lace a beautiful GSD pup, will both be put through their paces, the outcome of this will determine their suitability. New potentials need to be 12mths old (or close to) in order to be able to cope with the physical requirements as well as having the mental stamina. As dogs mature relatively quickly dependent on breed, by this age the 'goodies' become very evident if you know what to look for. The assessment process involves a number of tests that gauge the levels of various drives - these are inherent in the dog's breeding and cannot be taught so are the difference between mediocrity and the spectacular. These drives are the basis, which are moulded with positive reinforcement throughout the K9's training process.

So here's hoping he impresses - will let you all know the outcome shortly!!
